SEO & AI search

SEO vs GEO: what should your business actually invest in?

Understand the overlap between traditional search optimization and AI discovery, and choose work that improves both.

Start with the same foundation

SEO helps search engines discover, understand and surface your pages. GEO is a label for work aimed at visibility in generated answers. They overlap: a useful, accessible page with clear facts can serve people arriving through either channel. Treat GEO as an extension of your content and measurement strategy, not a replacement for a functioning website.

For a small business, the first decision is not which acronym to buy. It is whether important service and product pages explain the offer, can be crawled, and lead to an appropriate next step. An unclear offer remains unclear even when it is wrapped in structured data.

Separate technical fixes from editorial work

Technical work covers crawl access, canonical URLs, indexability, broken links and rendering. Editorial work covers customer questions, examples, definitions, limitations and evidence. A site can pass a technical audit while still offering little reason for a buyer or an answer engine to reference it.

A practical brief separates these workstreams. Ask for a list of affected URLs, the problem on each page, the proposed change and how completion will be checked. Avoid a deliverable described only as an AI visibility score without a reproducible measurement method.

What Google actually requires

Google says its existing SEO practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. There is no special AI schema or new machine-readable file required for those Search features. Eligibility does not guarantee appearance. That guidance concerns Google Search; it should not be presented as a promise about every response in the standalone Gemini app.

Choose a useful first sprint

Start with five customer questions that influence a purchase. Improve the relevant service pages, publish supporting answers where a separate article is warranted, and link them together. Measure qualified inquiries alongside impressions and clicks.

For an agency selling automation, a question such as ‘What happens when the bot cannot answer?’ is more useful than another generic definition of AI. The answer can show a real handoff policy, ownership and operating constraints. That is information a buyer can use even if no AI system cites the page.
